Every year the Polar Roll is a crap shoot. We register months prior in the hopes to race the smooth and rolling "sidewalks in the woods". Some years we roll the hardpack trails, some years it is a hike-a-bike slog in deep snow. We like the unknown. If we didn't want the gamble we would only do the Fat Bike Birkie. This year it was the latter, as the steady snowfall and warmer temperatures, made grooming less effective. Entering the single track in the top 30 allowed Jeff Abitz enough groomed snow to ride over half of the 26 mile course. Adam Koenig also "got his 10,000 minimum daily steps", on the badly degraded course. Polar Rolls are "pass/fail" events. Both Diablos PASSED! Full Results: my.raceresult.com/383960/ A couple weeks prior, Jeff completed the EX 30 mile "do anytime course". Although not great, the course was much more ridable. While Adam and Jeff were rolling and hiking, Diablo's Brian Hansen and Nate Penn were gliding along in the American Birkebeiner Skate Ski race over in Hayward WI. Diablo Cycling team sponsor Cranked Bike Studio recognized the majestic ground hog, and their customers, with a celebration of funky fat bike racing, record playing, food, drink. The race consisted of three (15 minute, 20 minute with handicap start order, 15 minute) heats. The short, twisty laps forced any passing to the high speed straight, or taking a shot of hot sauce to by pass the tight pinwheel. In the end Brian Hansen earned the win, with Adam Koenig finishing third. Even with Jeff Abitz's aero helmet and hot pink Comfy sweater, he surrendered his last year's top spot to Brian.
