After missing last years race, Jeff Abitz returned to this super chill, grass roots (roots, get it?) middle distance mountain bike endurance race. Goal: Complete as many 5.4 laps of jeep road and hand built single track in six hours as possible. With a couple minutes to go, Jeff Abitz pedaled his aging bones across the finish line, with the winning total of 11 laps. 6 Hour (20 total) Jeff Abitz - 1st - Jabitz

The Englewood Open also hosted a Category 1 UCI event that weekend. Racers flock, from nearly 30 states, to test themselves on this premier, professional level course. For the past several years, the Dipiazza's are easily the most consistent racers in the Wisconsin Off Road Race Series (WORS). Steve and Matthew have now completed all the WORS events so far!!! Well the first two anyway. Here is how they finished: Sport Boys 15-16 (31 total) Andrew DiPiazza - 6th Sport Boys 17-18 (18 total) Samuel DiPiazza - 8th Sport Men 30-39 (23 total) Matthew Eckstein - 6th Sport Men 50-59 (28 total) Steven Scherck - 20th Citizen Boys 14 & Under (29 total) Vincent DiPiazza - 27th Full Results: my.raceresult.com/244872/?fbclid=IwAR3cLHI8_GcQ-Hgfu-MB1e9dL-UF2ER416OcONhPfdBQHpcf494K_W4SgcI Full WORS Schedule: www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/wors/ - Jabitz
Criterium Racing is about continuous improvement, both in learning the tactics, and catering your fitness. This discipline has been compared to a "a chess game", where the other riders are to be treated as your pawns. Part of your strategy is to place them to your advantage. Of course, most of them are thinking the same about you! The Wisconsin Off Road Race Series was off and running with the Iola Bump & Jump traditional opening race. Now that was a good and proper gravel race. A couple hundred adventurous souls descended upon the small town of Laona WI (pop. 524) to ride the varied unpaved paths and roads of the Nicolet National Forest. Riders could choose 31, 71 or 102 mile distances in this sold out event. For many, the primary mission was to take in the beauty of the Northwoods backroads with friends, but for the Diablos, it was to compete! The Koenigs braved a cold and windy 35 degree day in their 2023 criterium season opener. Galen and Remington partook in their first ever criterium race. I wasn't there so in Derek's words: "Well, it was flippin cold but I had fun and stayed upright. It was 23 degrees at the start and I decided to show off the guns (legs) instead of insulating the goods from the elements. That wasn’t a good idea, it was actually a terrible idea. But I finished and was able to take what I learned from the race and not repeat for the pro race. There was a Nashville rider in the Masters race who just gunned it from the front and ended up getting five others to join. I was hanging in there back when all the moves were made and missed the opportunity to take part in the breakaway move. Eventually Jon Lester (gryphonveloracing.com/) formed a breakaway that stuck for the chase group, but I wasn’t about to chase Jon and ruin his day. Besides, Jon was so fast and I wouldn’t have caught him anyway. The Mike Murray Classic Criterium in Forest Park (1.4 mile circuit with fast straightaways a technical turns) - Sunday Pro Cat 1/2 (56 total): Derek Hughes - 39th - Jabitz George Kapitz is already known as a fat bike icon in Green Bay, the surrounding areas, heck, the midwest! This year he dreamed up a new event that included multiple laps of many of the fat bike trails frequented by him and his friends. The Winter Ultra 100 offered a low cost opportunity to pick a day when all or most of the trail venues were open, to complete the provided course. Use of public "connector" roads were to be kept to minimum. When the deadline arrived, only a few dozen finished within the (generous)18 hour maximum time. Finishers were awarded a stunning mug, a major award if you will! Details can be read at the Snow Crown Series link above. Anyway... Diablo Cycling's Adam Koenig and Jeff Abitz completed the challenge, weeks apart, and here is what they said: Adam Koenig (first Diablo to finish): "Welp, I rode 100 miles on my fat bike. With friends. The morning was rough. I hit a wall mentally after some tech and gear issues and basically wanted to quit the entire time at refo. I changed socks, got some encouragement and decided to keep going. The road was a boon. I felt amazing in the pavement and after working with @hoard_dylan we made excellent time from refo to He-Nis-Ra. The rest of the day was about managing gear and effort and making sure to keep nutrition steady. My new homemade hydration mix (powerpacinf.run) was perfect. Ultimately this was a test, a massive challenge and a day about encouragement and friendship. One of the hardest rides I’ve ever done, and without my friends I never would have continued. I am so glad I did it, and finished. That’s a one and done for this guy." Jeff Abitz, you're up!: "Paul Fagan and I finished this Winter Ultra thing last night. Paul (yes the same Paul that supported me for Marji Gesick, Crusher, Polar Roll) drove the support van. Snow conditions were less than optimal (road riding? I understand it now) but the weather was calm and sunny. So in summary this was a big job, perhaps my most challenging one day cycling event. Oh, and Thanks to Paul F for navigating and inspiring me to, at least attempt, to ride in trail conditions I wouldn’t have otherwise tried. Lessons learned: Don’t forget your toolbox, use lower gearing, leave your dropper saddle post installed!, bring more food choices." - Jabitz
This year's Polar Roll was a "ripper", and I'm not referring to the consequences following the morning after celebration beers. It is well understood that registering for this race is followed up with and apology, for the always predicted, challenging course conditions. The 26+ mile course was considering to be the fastest course yet. Three of Diablo Cycling's "Snow Angels" continue to return to the premier (in my opinion) fat bike race on earth. Here is how they did: 30-Mile Bike (315 total) Jeff Abitz - 22nd John Bessey - 28th Adam Koenig - 60th Full Results: my.raceresult.com/233407/#1_7AAEAD ![]() Below is some footage from (non Diablo) Nathan Long.
