The course was fast and exhilarating, using flowy single track, frequently interspersed with fast two track. The Diablo Cycling mountain bikers turned out big for this race, especially since many of us consider this to be our "home course". Notable results include: - Jeff Abitz winning a three way sprint, barely edging out the WORS Series and Midwest Regional Champion! Look at these margins!: - Landon Nelson and Hunter Lester finish 1st and 2nd overall!
- Brent Rohrs is back from last Decembers cyclocross boo boo, finishing 3rd in Single Speed...on a 26 inch bike with rim brakes! - Nick Niemi finishes 3rd in an Elite race. A podium in ANY Elite race is always a BIG DEAL! August 11, 2018: Diablo's sole triathlon freak Scot Rajsich qualified and returned to Age Group Nationals. Scot competed with the nations best, racing both Olympic and Sprint distances (not at the same time...that would be too challenging). The Sprint swim was cancelled due to RIP tides. What's next for Scot? Why another Ironman Wisconsin of course. He will be staring at Lake Monona, ready to start his third full Ironman, on September 9th. www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/americas/ironman/wisconsin.aspx#/axzz5OqtNNWKU Interested in spectating on the hilly and rural bike route? The last WCA road race of the year stamped an exclamation point on a season of extremes. What began with rescheduled races due to a historic blizzard in mid-April led to oppressive heat and humidity in the summer. The New Glarus Road Race (otherwise known as the Tour of Little Switzerland) presented by Brazen Dropouts was no different, with temperatures in the mid-80s and dew points in the mid- to upper-60s. While the conditions weren't as revolting as some of the days of Tour of America's Dairyland, only three Diablos made the trek to the beer capital of Wisconsin, and they made the most of it. Weekends in August go by fast, but not as fast as the riders at the Project Echelon Omnium. A few Diablos went down to Delafield to tackle a few laps around a 5-mile circuit, burn their lungs with a time trial of the circuit course, complete an extremely technical crit, and support the good cause behind Project Echelon. The results were good, but some crashes left a bitter taste on an otherwise spectacular weekend. Sunday –August 5 , 2018 Hixon Forest Park — La Crosse, WI wors.org/schedule/hixon-forest/ Skills were a must as this driftless region challenged racers with thrilling rock gardens, root tangles, and punchy climbs with fast descents. WEMS Race #4 - Thunderdown in the Underdowns - August `18, 2018 wemseries.com/ WORS Race #9 - Reforestration Ramble - August 19, 2018 wors.org/schedule/reforestation-ramble/ - Jabitz Grand View WI: For 39 years the Grand View Volunteer Fire Department, in conjunction with their Annual Homecoming Picnic weekend, has put on the Firehouse 50. This scenic 50 mile bicycle road race and individual time trial, takes place on black top roads winding through the pristine Chequamegon National Forest around Lake Namakagon and Lake Owen. Although I knew I would lack the time trial (TT) power (focus shifted to LONG mountain bike events) of years past, I still had to attend this great race. For one, the course is fantastic! Smooth, winding, and hilly. Nice. Secondly, Jon Lester would be racing the TT! I knew this would be good. This man has fully dedicated himself to this discipline. I knew he would win, and I had to be there to experience it. And WIN he did. The only thing that prevented him from taking the course record was the strong winds, driving rain, and slick roads, not to mention missing an unmarked right turn. Job done Lester, job done. But no, he still had work to do. An hour later, he completes the road race, after a grueling 50 mile TT. I am drinking cheap beer and eating Cheese-its while he was out for more! Individual Time Trial (52 total): Jon Lester: 1st in division, 1st overall - 27.4 mph average Jeff Abitz: 4th in division, 7th overall Brent Williams started the road race but flatted in the first two miles. So, he took a ride in fire truck back the parking lot, changed his tube and proceded to tear up the course solo, passing several racers along the way. - Jabitz
The Belgianwerx Team set up a phenomenal course in the town of Waubeka, also known as the home of Flag Day. The race itself is named after the late Ozaukee County Deputy Sheriff, Adam Hartwig, who unexpectedly passed away of natural causes in 2016 at the young age of 30. Three Diablo riders ventured down to the rolling course, only to be greeted by high heat and humidity. Here's how they fared (some call it surviving): |
