With a 7th, a 4th, a 5th (Trek Cup) and now a 5th, Jeff has found himself solidly on the "B team". With his lack of 45 second power costing him on the fast straights, will he somehow improve that power to weight ratio enough to find a way to a top 3? With four races remaining he is running out of time. Regardless, the training will help when fat bike racing starts in January. Serpentijn Cycling serpentijn.bike/ selected a fantastic venue for a true cyclocross race. With a mandatory hill run up and an uphill road start finish (Jabitz's Achilles heel), and a buttload of switchbacks... man this course tested everyone...and the sandpit, yes! Anyways, the Diablo Cycling Masters Category 1,2,3 50+ Team were there to race! Sorry, no images this week...we were all racing! Diablo Cycling's Andrew Knickerbocker has proven himself to be the "Gravel King" of the team. Race after race after race, the guy continues to podium the biggest gravel races in the Midwest. Sheesh! Talk about being on a mission! Tarmac specialist Andy Webb gave the gravel racing thing a go, finishing 11th of 68 total. Post race commentary revealed he shall return next year with high expectations.  A day before the world’s best cyclocross athletes raced the season opener of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup Series, Diablos Brian Hansen and Jeff Abitz raced a shorter, but much muddier version, of the same course. All day rain on the day (Friday) before, and one of the last races of the day, turned the 1.5 mile course to a quagmire of mud. During the final lap (only two!) the thick mud forced Jeff's chain off his ring near the bottom of the final flyover (borrowed image below) forcing him to slowly drag is bike up the ramp, slipping and sliding, and losing the podium in the process. That's racing. Still, a 5th makes the concessionary, and made up, "wide angle podium". Fun fact: 12 registered racers choose to not even start. After dozens of hours to set up, and a few hours to tear down, the Diablo Cycling Team gave back to the WI CX Series wicxseries.com/ with another successful event. Several course changes (more off cambers and more time in the Covered Arena Barn) from last year, were well received by the racers.
