June 22, 2019 Michigan Au Gres at Lake Huron to Ludington at Lake Michigan Distance: 210 miles Elevation Gain: approx. 6,500 ft. micoasttocoast.com/ Last fall Brent Rohrs expressed to me his interest in a 210 mile gravel bicycle race across his home state of Michigan. With an offer to arrange the logistics, the addition of THE Jon Lester, and A1 support staff/mechanic/water boy/coach Dave Kay, I could not say no. And...former teammate (always a teammate) Justin Michaels provided "rabbit like" motivation. (Yeah he beat us all). The course consisted of fast gravel roads, wooded and sandy two-tracks, short but punchy climbs, and 40 mph downhills. After over 12 hours, Brent was the first Diablo to the finish, with a 28th overall, 7th in division. If only Jeff didn't have a head start on getting old Brent would have made the 50-59 podium. A few minutes later Jeff finished 29th, making the podium with a 3rd. Jon finished a short time later on his freaking mountain bike. Thanks again to Dave for the support at the three checkpoints, and The Recyclist Bicycle Co. for setting up Brent and Jeff with a couple of Giant bikes that proved up to the task. Scot Rajsich raced the Aquabike division to 4th place in his division. Well done Scot.
What is an Aquabike? Aquabike is a swim/bike event that focuses on the swim and bike legs of the triathlon without the run.
The Diablo’s conquered the rain soaked rocks, roots, and fast ski trails of Lowes Creek County Park. Since 2005, racers have been challenged by the whoops, twisty pine trees, a creek crossing, a swoopy boardwalk, and short, punchy climbs. Participating Diablos included: wors.org/results/ Junior (14 and under) Female 11 to 12: Kylie Lester- 2nd Junior (14 and under) Male 9 to 10: Vincent Dipiazza Cat 3 (Citizen) Female 11 to 14: Macy Lester – 1st, 1st overall! It may not have felt like the middle of June, but the Diablo riders were feeling their fitness gains from grueling trainer session in the winter.

Okay, time to write in 3rd person again... Jeff Abitz raced his Specialized Epic mountain bike (Thank you Recyclist Bicycle Co.) covering about 70 miles of mostly single track in 6:15:25. With about three hours left to race, a large stick took out a spoke in his rear Roval wheel (image below). After nursing his bike "Phillip" for about 20 minutes, he noted the wheel remained fairly true. Race pace restored, this 50 year old finished five minutes behind the 25 year old winner. This qualifies Jeff to compete in the 2019 State Games of America to be held in Lynchburg, Virginia or the 2021 State Games of America to be in Iowa (maybe this one - JA). www.visitwausau.com/mountain-biking Mid Race (6+ Hour) – 22 Total: Jeff Abitz – 2nd wemseries.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/2019-Romp-Swamp-Results_Final.pdf - Jabitz
Presented by The Capital Off Road Pathfinders (CORP) and the Loft & Shove Mountain Bike race team. The trail system at CamRock was a blend of wide and fast flowing single-track, fields of prairie grass, wooded single-track, bermed turns and some rocky and rooted technical sections. Participating Diablos (wide angle podium positions indicated): wors.org/results/ Junior (14 and under) Female 11 to 12: Kylie Lester- 3rd Junior (14 and under) Male 9 to 10: Vincent Dipiazza Cat 3 (Citizen) Female 11 to 14: Macy Lester – 1st, 1st overall! June 1, 2, & 3, 2019 3-DAYS, 4-TRIATHLONS, 140+ MILES = 1-EPIC EVENT. americantriple-t.com/american-triple-t/ In the words of Scot Rajsich: "Triple-T is an epic event for Triathlon Athletes.. It is at Salt Lake State Park in South Eastern Ohio.. very beautiful area... and hilllly... 4 races in 3 days. They have XT and ST events. XT is "long course". Friday is Super T, basically a warm-up race - super short triathlon. It was an all-out effort (250 yard swim, 3 mile bike and 1 mile run). Saturday morning is the Olympic Distance race (1 mile swim, 24.55-mile bike and 6.55-mile run). 3 hours later, we did the same course but this time we biked first, then swam, than ran. That was one of the hardest things I have ever done... Sunday, due to safety (raining, poor road conditions and some medical concerns the day before), I decided to do the short course...smart move. Weekend totals: 3 miles of swimming, 20+ miles of running, and 80+ miles biking with 8,150 feet (21% maximum) of climbing. I looked forward to 3% grades as a relief. Descents were scary 90-degree turns, on terrible roads, then straight back up. Maximum speeds, in races, were 43, 47, and 45.6 mph. Finishing was goal vs. placing..." - Jabitz
