With live music, large hyped-up crowds, and a party atmosphere, the World Cup experience is a "can't miss" event for the cyclocross racer and spectator. In the five years of it's existance the Marji Gesick has become legendary. The race gets significantly longer and more difficult each year. It is the only race, in the National Endurance Mountain Bike Series, that fills the (mens) registration in a few hours, 11 months in advance. For the majority of riders the challenge is to finish. To not give up. To avoid the shame of texting #QUITTER and having the red dot by their name on the riders tracking board. After last year's trip over the handlebars ended Andy Webb's race in the last 15 miles, he vowed to come back and finish his business. With two 100* mile finishes behind him, Jeff Abitz choose to up the challenge in this year's inaugural 200* mile Out and Back. Eddie Kolka decided to ride a singlespeed...in those hills. I'll leave it at that. The Lester family raced the Mini Marji (my plan for next year? - Jabitz) Gabe Rogaczewski had an amazing result! Diablo Cycling Results: *mileages are more! 200* mile Out and Back - 53% DNF Rate (Start at finish. Ride to start of 100 mile race. Ride to finish of 100 mile race, while making the time cuts) my2.raceresult.com/137718/#6_ED701B Jeff Abitz: 13th of 28, 42:30:25 (no sleep, no crashes, one rear tyre change) 100* mile - 63% DNF Rate my2.raceresult.com/137718/#1_A4A057 Andy Webb: 23:26 (one underwater excursion in a big puddle) Although Steve Scherck was forced to drop out after around 6 hours, Jeff Abitz appreciated his encouragement and feeding strategy. ("You need protein Jeff" - Yes Steve.) 50* mile - 30% DNF Rate my2.raceresult.com/137718/#2_145026 Eddie Kolka on a singlespeed: 14:12:08 15 mile Mini Marji my2.raceresult.com/137718/#5_6F2C14 Megan Lester: 9th, 2:35:25 Macy Lester:12th, 3:01:50 Gabe Rogaczewski: 4th, 2:06:49 John Lester: Volunteered to "sweep". Sally Lester had a missed turn that sent her off course. - Jabitz
Ethan Janssen had a great result in the 16 mile Short and Fat www.cheqmtb.com/event-info/short-fat/: - Jabitz. PS: Here are some "blast from the past" pictures of me in the early 2000's:
St. Paul, MN to Canadian Border and back September 11, 2019 www.northstarbicyclerace.com/ The North Star Bicycle Race is a solo, unsupported, paved race. The route consists of the existing roads, mixed use paths, and trails of the North Star Bicycle Route: www.dot.state.mn.us/bike/north-star-route.html After his dominating win, in the inaugural race last year, Jon Lester returned to defend his title. Giving others a shot at the best, a sign of a "true winner". Several of Jon's friends, teamates and fans followed his progress in real time at: northstarbicyclerace2019.maprogress.com/ For well over half the race, Jon had built a commanding lead, but eventually succumbed to a bike with two functioning gears, rain, and winds approaching 40 mph. Putting safety first, Jon took refuge just long enough to warm his shivering body, dry out his clothes, and get a little rest. At the end Jon finished the 629.4 mile race in 2nd place! Great job! - Jabitz
In the unedited words of Diablo Scot Rajsich: "9/8/2019 - Ironman Wisconsin (ie IMmooo - you need to say "Moo" at the 1st turn of the swim). A Full Ironman is 2.4 miles Swim, 112 miles Bike, and 26.2 miles Run and must complete in 17 hours or less. Weather conditions: mid 50's to low 60's with rain on bike and run - east wind 10+ Mph Swim: met Goal of 1 hour 19 minutes (goal was 1:20) - waves were 2-3 foot and were not the easiest Bike: decided to not "hammer" to save legs for the run - probably a mistake since legs were not there on run anyway.. Bento Box with tubes and CO2 opened twice over a set of tracks until I taped shut... cost me some time. Could never get warm and was having GI issues (had to stop 2x at porta-potty - TMI) Garmin had ~5,000 feet of climb - Avg. was just over 17.41mph for 112 miles... Goal was 18.5 mph - last 5 miles were into a headwind and raining... fun fun Run: just say cold, cramping, GI Issues, Puking made it miserable... worst Marathon Time I have had ever had. It was a 5-hour 41-minute adventure - Goal was 4:35... Walk/Run last 5 miles in the pouring rain in the dark... Mental Toughness in full mode to finish... but never did I think I would not. It is great to keep saying to yourself.. "one foot in front of the other and having fun "singing in the rain" Thanks to my wife, and friends who endured the weather the whole day to be at the finish line... Overall did in 13 hours 49 min.. placing 53 out of 122 in age group and 1,028 out of 2,461 who signed up... Worst Finishing Time for me, but I am a 4x Ironman... 2020 will be a get body healthy again and will not do a Full Ironman.. 2021?? One for the thumb (maybe)." Here are the Diablo's that raced, with top five finishes noted: legacy.usacycling.org/results/?permit=2019-2544 Elite Category 3/4: Michael Sullivan Adam Koenig Masters 35+ Category 1/2/3: Brian Davis – 4th Adam Koenig Masters 50+ Category 1/2/3: John Robertson John Lichtenberg Masters 50+ Category 4/5: Mark Framness Brain Davis raced it (like you can) and created a pretty slick video. Watch it below, share, and subscribe! Where was Jeff Abitz? He was attending his son's football game. "As a senior starting Defensive Tackle at UW La crosse, this is his last season to play the game. Priorities. I'll show up for a few Sunday races and State Championships. Next year I will be back for a full season". - Jabitz
Just when you though summer was over and cross finally arrived, the Gateway Cup in St. Louis reminded us all that road racing is still alive and kicking.
As the only Diablo triathlete, Scot Rasich returned to Traverse City, to once again represent Diablo Cycling as the team’s only triathlete. The commitment to train in the three disciplines of swimming, running, and cycling makes Scot a unique and appreciated asset to Diablo Cycling and our sponsors. In Scot’s words: “I would recommend for all to do TC...it was great. I haven't done as many races this year and with IMmooo (Ironman WI) two weeks away, I wanted to treat this as a long training day, with the only expectation to finish in sub 6 hours. This was the most relaxed I have ever been before a race. Weather was 50 to mid 70’s…perfect. Water was 69 degrees with little waves. Wind was less than 8 mph. 1.2 Mile SWIM: 36 Min - avg. 1:53/100 yards 56 Mile BIKE: 02:47:13 - avg. 20.09 mph 2,500 feet of climb over 56 miles with alot of slow uphills and fast downhills. It was just like I planned as a training day for the upcoming IMMoo course. The pro women winner averaged 22 mph. 13 Mile RUN: 02:04:10 - avg. 9:28 minute miles. I tripped on a wooden plank and fell into a guard railing, landing on my left, upper ribs. That knocked the wind out of me. The great thing about Triathletes is a couple stopped to see how I was. I said “good enough” and started to run. Overall: 5:36 got me an 18th in age out of 132 (Top 13%). 390th out of 2,300 overall. Not too bad for a training day. On Sunday, September 8th, Scot wil compete in yet another Ironman Wisconsin. www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/americas/ironman/wisconsin.aspx#/axzz5yNdasWiB - Jabitz
