If you find yourself competing in anything with the word "Nationals" in the title, you can be assured that you're in the highest echelon of talent. In early August, the ultra-talented Andy Webb and Jon Lester traveled to Colorado Springs to compete in the 2019 USA Cycling Masters Road Nationals races and they returned with some hardware! Jon Lester placed third in the time trial for 40-44 age category with a time of 51:01.11! Equally as impressive is how close the podium was, as first place finished in 50:35.17 and fifth was 52:51.72. Andy finished 14th in his race of truth with a time of 58:02:52. To summarize how deep they went to crush a nearly hour-long effort, both were feel the effects the following day and did not finish the road race. That doesn't tell the whole story, though, as Jon made some valiant moves to bridge before finally running out of gas. Whereas Jon's specialty is long, steady efforts, Andy excels at punchy crit racing.
He finished 21st out of the 35 riders who crossed the finish line, which was the 6th highest placing for a Cat 2 rider. Jon was happy with his bronze, so he rode gravel instead. The laid-back nature of riding crushed stone is much more appealing than the maniacal antics of criteriums, anyways. Hats (or caps, but definitely not helmets) go off to both gentleman for representing Diablo Cycling and all the wonderful sponsors who support the team!
