The Belgianwerx Team set up a phenomenal course in the town of Waubeka, also known as the home of Flag Day. The race itself is named after the late Ozaukee County Deputy Sheriff, Adam Hartwig, who unexpectedly passed away of natural causes in 2016 at the young age of 30. Three Diablo riders ventured down to the rolling course, only to be greeted by high heat and humidity. Here's how they fared (some call it surviving): Cat 4/5
Cat 3/4
Be sure to follow all the Diablo riders on Strava! Course profile and tactics The race was rolling and full of surges, especially at the beginning of each lap, where a one-minute kicker raised the watts to everyone's anaerobic capacity. The VeloViewer display makes it look relatively tame, but race tactics usually make things interesting. For instance, in the 4/5 race, a VeloCause rider went off the front in the first lap. He was only ahead by approximately 400 meters for most the race, but the group didn't feel like bridging. This was mostly due in part because of the help he had from a teammate who wisely controlled the peloton. Other riders would try and surge, but the collective thought was that it wasn't worth burning matches in the heat to catch a rider who would probably burn out himself. In the end, a few riders were able to bridge and catch him, but Logan was not one, as he was off the back after he didn't pull through on the downhill of the kicker. He tried to "chase," catching 3rd, 4th, and 5th winds after slow-pedaling a number of times. Eventually he closed the gap of 800 meters to less than five, but the inclines at the end of the course left him in trailing for good. Logan's race file shows that during the final 10 minutes of his chase, he averaged 260 watts. As seen in W'bal (watts expenditure), his normal fatigue was quite low, since this is normally a two or three hour pace for him.
Where it gets interesting is how his heart responded. 182 BPM is a threshold or VO2 effort for him, which would normally equate to 330-340 watts. Everyone raced in the same conditions, which can only mean one thing: time to HTFU! But first ... a 59 cent cone.
