A day before the world’s best cyclocross athletes raced the season opener of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup Series, Diablos Brian Hansen and Jeff Abitz raced a shorter, but much muddier version, of the same course. All day rain on the day (Friday) before, and one of the last races of the day, turned the 1.5 mile course to a quagmire of mud. During the final lap (only two!) the thick mud forced Jeff's chain off his ring near the bottom of the final flyover (borrowed image below) forcing him to slowly drag is bike up the ramp, slipping and sliding, and losing the podium in the process. That's racing. Still, a 5th makes the concessionary, and made up, "wide angle podium". Fun fact: 12 registered racers choose to not even start.
