RACE THE LAKE
http://www.dutrirun.com/rtl
100 mile road race on August 13, 2017 in Fondulac WI
Results: http://www.pttiming.com/results/18947#/results::1503022198936
Diablo Cycling participation was huge on this 100 mile race around
Lake Winnebago.

In Wave 1:
Other than one rider who launced a solo attack
in the first 3 miles
(more on that later), the 95 rider group stayed together.
After the High Cliff Park climb (mile 50), a few Diablo's and several others lost contact with the peloton. The remaining Diablos  generally rode at or near the front for most the second half.

In support of last years two top finishers Brent Williams and Andy Webb,
Brent Rohrs, John Robertson, Jeff Abitz, and John Lester helped cover attacks
(there were none that succeeded), and kept a lookout for hijinks.
At about mile 70, John Lester and Jeff Abitz took up the chase with a small, 6 person chase group, and no help from an unresponsive peloton, to bring back a solo rider (HERO) that had built up a five minute margin on the peloton.
In the final four miles, with the Diablo's (a little Abitz, a little more Rohrs, some Robertson, and ALOT of Lester) at or near the front, Webb and Williams tried to navigate the 30+ mph* swarming 72 rider peloton to position themselves for the final two tight turns and sprint finish. With less then 1/2 mile to go, and Williams behind him, Abitz tried to shoot thru a gap, only to feel the squeeze of the rider to his a right. A little bike shimmy correction (lean you leg on the top tube - Jabitz Top Tip) averted disaster.
Bunch sprint finishes this massive are all about positioning.
Every racer finds their own balance of risk, aggression, patience, adherance to the centerline rule (there were violators!) and even compassion to the safety of their fellow racers (we have jobs and families).

Rounding the final hard left turn, and into the long finish straight,
some sprinted to the line, some
stayed on the gas in hopes of getting a Division award, and some outside the top ten safely "sat up" and cruised in with dignity.
Minutes later the remaining Diablo's rode in.
Adam Koenig fought to the finish with a severe leg cramp, requiring assistance off his bike.
Amber Searer's courage and skills in her first
Wave 1 attempt, and her team commitment, secured our Coed Team result.

In the end there were five Diablo's on the podium,
and a 2nd place finish in Coed Team.

With a summer of hot, hard, and long runs before and after many of our bicycle rides, trips to lakes and quarrys, and podium finishes in several triathlons,
Scot earned the right to compete with the nations best!
